Yaw Adu-Sarkodie (BSc, BMedSci (Hons), MBChB, MSc, DipGUMed, PhD, FGCP) was appointed Senior Lecturer in Clinical Microbiology in 1997 and Associate Professor in 2002. He has been Vice-Dean of SMS since 2008, having previously served as Hall Master of the Clinical Students Hostel at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He is currently head of the Department of Clinical Microbiology where he leads in the teaching and development of programmes for undergraduate students of medicine, nursing and medical laboratory technology. His department also runs research degree MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes in Clinical Microbiology where he is responsible for the supervision of research and theses of many students. He coordinates and teaches on the STI/HIV course of the Population and Reproductive Health Programme of the SMS. At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, he is Senior Specialist in Clinical Microbiology.

Prof Adu-Sarkodie’s research interests are in Sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS), Microbial agents and antimicrobial resistance. He is currently Principal Investigator of UK-DFID funded Research Progamme Consortia for Sexual Reproductive Health and HIV, USAID funded project on HIV Most at Risk Populations, Febrile Illnesses Study in Children in Africa (International Vaccine institute, Seoul), Typhoid Fever Surveillance Study in Africa (International Vaccine Institute Seoul) and the Bat Project (Deutsche Research Foundation). He holds research collaborations with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Bernhard Nocht Institute Hamburg, University of Bonn, the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and the University of Boston.

Nationally he is a member of the National Expert Committee on HIV Drug Resistance and the HIV Technical Working Group of the Ghana Health Service. Internationally he is on the Executive Committee of the International Union for Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) and a Steering Committee Member of the Africa Group.  He also serves on the STI Expert Working on of the WHO, Geneva, with whom he has served in many Temporary Advisor positions. He serves as Examiner to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the South Africa College of Physicians (Diploma in Sexual Health and HIV), and the University of Ghana.

Prof Adu-Sarkodie has contributed publications to the Lancet, British Medical Journal, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, International Journal of STI, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, AIDS, Journal of Virology, Tropical Doctor, Annals of Tropical Pediatrics, and the Ghana Medical Journal amongst others. He has done journal review work for Sexually Transmitted Infections, Bulletin of the World Health Organisation, Faculty of 1000-Medicine (STI section), and the Ghana Medical Journal.
